Professorship (W2) (6 years/tenure track)
of Systemic Neuroscience

commencing as soon as possible.

Candidates should have a track-record in the research area "neural circuits for active sensing" or related topics in systemic neuroscience. Scientific approaches can be experimental – preferably with a focus on vertebrates - and/or computational (mechanistic modelling, network theory, as well as analysis of complex or large data sets).

The professorship is integral part of the Faculty of Biology, the interdisciplinary „Munich Center for Neuroscience – Brain and Mind“, the „Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN)”, the teaching program „Master in Neuroscience“ and the „Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Munich“ (https://neuro.bio.lmu.de/). A strong engagement in collaborative projects is also expected from the new position holder.

In teaching, the professorship contributes to the bachelor and master programs at the Faculty of Biology. Depending on the candidate's scientific profile, teaching can focus on biological or mathematical/biophysical topics.

The Faculty of Biology at LMU Munich is one of the strongest faculties in Germany in terms of research and third-party funding (https://www.dfg.de/sites/fundingatlas2021/). The Faculty is located in the Biocenter of the High-Tech Campus Martinsried together with other life sciences of LMU Munich, the Max-Planck-Society and the Helmholtz Center Munich. Within the Faculty of Biology, service units for high-performance computing, genomics, bioanalytics, electron microscopy, light microscopy, proteomics and metabolomics are available.

LMU Munich seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The initial appointment will be for six years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.

zu besetzen.

Die Professur soll den bestehenden Schwerpunkt „neural circuits for active sensing“ am Standort München oder Fragestellungen aus den systemischen Neurowissenschaften bearbeiten. Wissenschaftliche Ansätze können experimenteller Natur – bevorzugt mit einem Fokus auf Wirbeltiere – und/oder computergestützter Natur sein (mechanistische Modellierung, Netzwerktheorie, ebenso wie die Analyse komplexer oder großer Datensätze). Die Professur ist inte- graler Bestandteil der Fakultät für Biologie, des fachbereichsüber- greifenden „Munich Center for Neuroscience – Brain and Mind“, der „Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN)”, des Studiengangs „Master in Neuroscience“ und des „Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Munich“ (https://neuro.bio.lmu. de/). Ein entsprechendes Engagement in Verbundprojekten wird auch von der Professur erwartet.

In der Lehre wirkt die Professur in Grundlagen- und Spezialveran- staltungen in den Bachelor- und Masterstudiengängen an der Fakultät für Biologie mit. Je nach wissenschaftlicher Ausrichtung der Kandidatin bzw. des Kandidaten (m/w/d) können die Lehr- Schwerpunkte im biologischen oder mathematischen/biophysika- lischen Bereich liegen.

Die Fakultät für Biologie der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) ist eine der forschungs- und drittmittelstärk- sten Fakultäten deutschlandweit (https://www.dfg.de/sites/fun- dingatlas2021/). Die Berufung erfolgt bei Vorliegen der beamtenrechtlichen Voraussetzungen in einem Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit für die Dauer von sechs Jahren. Bei positiver Evaluation der fachlichen, päda- gogischen und persönlichen Eignung kann das Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit frühestens nach drei Jahren in ein Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit umgewandelt werden.

Im Rahmen des LMU Academic Career Programm besteht in besonderen Ausnahmefällen und bei herausragenden Leistungen in Forschung und Lehre die Möglichkeit einer späteren Anhebung der Professur von W2 nach W3.
